Much was made about London fashion designer Mark Fast using “plus size” models in his Spring 2010 runway show. Stylists left, he got tons of press. In the end, he sent women down the runway in dresses that just weren’t designed to flatter their figures. Now V Magazine’s February issue is dedicated to women of all sizes. Since we are beginning to move beyond the idea that only a size 2 is sexy, it’s time to get real fashion for all sizes.
Enter Chicago based designer Bese Zeynep Guzeldere and her collection Zeyno.
Finally true fashion for women of all sizes.
Today the freshest ideas in design are coming from ethnic cultures and the major influences in Zeyno come from Guzeldere’s Turkish heritage. Her senior collection, A La Turka, was inspired by the Ottoman Empire. She included a pattern that she printed herself to resemble a tile in the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The fabrics are rich in color and luxurious in texture, both invoke the feeling of splendor associated with Turkey.
Her Wild Forest Collection was showcased at Chicago’s Fashion Week 2009. I love this collection because you can see the skill of her draping and cutting – maybe picked up from a Julian Roberts masterclass on subtraction cutting she attended. You can also see how Guzeldere chooses the most flattering point of a woman to accentuate. When designing for women larger than a size 6, it’s not enough to just cut the clothes large enough to fit a curvaceous figure. The clothes must be actually designed for that figure, this is where Zeyno beats all others. Guzeldere’s design philosophy is to create clothing for curvaceous women that is both fun and makes them feel confident.
Guzeldere also creates custom clothing for clients and recreates looks that a client likes but to flatter the client’s individual body shape.
So whatever your size or shape, Zeyno is there to flatter.
