Designers: Use Starlets at Your Own Risk

October 6th, 2009

of course lindsay lohan’s clothing line is horrific, has anyone looked at her lately? ew. – twitter.com/X3amysarah

And that pretty much summed up the overall perception of Lindsay Lohan’s debut as an “artistic adviser” at Emanuel Ungaro. Critics panned it and others just laughed. My initial thought when I heard that Ungaro was bringing on Lohan, was what does she know about fashion? Other than having dated the sister of one of my favorite designers (Charlotte Ronson)?

Not all celebrity / fashion house collaborations are failures. Some work out well.

A few notable collaborations:
Sophia Coppola combing forces with Louis Vuitton for an accessories line. She has been a muse of Marc Jacobs for a while now. Louis Vuitton doesn’t need the added press of having Sophia Coppola around since pretty much anything Marc Jacobs does get attention. So it’s safe to assume that LV genuinely wants her input.

Kate Moss
collaborates with Top Shop. She approves designs and suggests things. Let’s not forget that she is in the fashion industry, has worked with every top designer out there, and is obviously a savvy businesswoman. Top Shop gained not just in sales, but in publicity also – really a brilliant move on their part.

Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. line began as a joint collaboration with LeSportSac in 2004. The success of L.A.M.B. is an inspiration to all celebrities that love fashion. But Gwen Stefani was not a woman that just had stylists dress her. This is a woman that always went her own unique way and definitely has an individual perspective. She keeps true to herself in the L.A.M.B. collections (ok, I may have overdone the Project Runway clichés there).

Gucci brought in Mary J Blige to work on an accessories line. Not much publicity or fanfare. Not much gain, but not much pain either.

Now Gwyneth Paltrow is teaming with the French fashion brand ZOEtee’s to develop tees that would work into Gwyneth’s fab life. The outcome is still pending, but she is very guarded with her image. ZOEtee’s is not risking much at all.

So did Ungaro gain from bringing in Lohan? From an artistic standpoint, most would say no. But then again, when is the last time you discussed or even thought about Ungaro?
