Opposites Attract

November 2nd, 2009

One of the most challenging parts about dressing is creating the “outfit.” That complete look, that once achieved, can make you feel fabulous. This fall opposites attract, and it looks great. This season’s “Look” is pairing contrasting pieces to create a sense of balance. Whether it is in the textures, silhouettes, colors or the yin and yang, the looks that contrast this year are taking hold.

Silhouettes
Leggings are everywhere- I personally love them and I am eternally grateful for whoever invented them- but I’m also excited about the possibilities they have now. Paired with an oversized sweater or fur vest the lean look of the legging and the volume of the top flatters so many women.

Masculine, feminine-
Leather pieces worn with ruffles or studded accents paired with pearls are being seen now too. A nice little push for this look started with Sex and the City, whose style always influences many fashion lovers. Sarah Jessica Parker wore many of these looks, creating the feminine / masculine contrast and hitting the spot every time. One thing I love about this look is that it’s nice not to have to go all-out girly, or to be a tomboy, but to strike a happy medium. All year and looking to next we see these contrasts and it’s a very cool look, but with this a little bit goes a long way.

Contrasts create interest in an outfit, which, for most fashionistas is the reason we love fashion so much to begin with. Not everything works for everyone- If you are a little nervous to wear it its probably ok…if you are real nervous, get some input first. Trend talk is a perfect place to throw out an idea and see what others think to help you tweak it before you debut it.

Who is worthy of being a Fashion Icon?

September 30th, 2009

This morning I read two different fashion stories: The first was about Sarah Jessica Parker as a fashion icon being selected as the new face of Halston. The second was about Carmen Electra as a fashion icon sharing her style secrets.

These two women are so dissimilar that I had to wonder how the same term could be used for both of them. So what makes a fashion icon? If a celebrity puts on clothes that they may or may not have chosen themselves and they look good, does that celebrity deserve icon status?

A fashion icon is someone that influences fashion choices that the rest of us make. An icon constitutes a defining characteristic of a given society or era (wikipedia).
True style is an art. Just as a modern artist that must be first trained in classic technique, a true fashion icon must first understand fashion design. She must understand cuts, materials, and techniques in order to make wise, not trendy, choices. My interpretation then, is that as a fashion icon should be more than a celebrity that looks good in the clothes that a stylist lays out for them. She has her own voice, she listens to her instincts, and she takes fashion risks. And those risks (usually) look good on her.

On our website, users are asked in their profiles to name their fashion icon. The question is intended to get people thinking about whom or what inspires them and what makes someone stand out for their fashion choices and style.

For those that love fashion, it is how we express our creative side to the world. It is an outward display of our moods, our hopes, and our self-images. Where we find that inspiration is up to us. I guess on thing SJP and Carmen Electra do share is that self-confidence we all admire. Self-confidence is, after all, iconic.
