To complete our Building an Accessories Wardrobe Series that started with Can the US Ever Lead in Fashion? we move to the “IT” item of the season. The easiest (most affordable) way to instantly update your wardrobe is to get the current must-have accessory. Each season there is an obvious choice. This past summer is was the fedora. This winter no gal should be caught without a good selection of tights. And not just a drawer full of black tights – tights are now an accessory to be used for drama and fun.

Textured Black Tights
Yes, there is a practical side of tights. They allow us to wear skirts in the winter without freezing. But we are going to focus here on using them as fashion accents. (We love practicality but come on, yawn). The tights of this season need to have something more. They need to have standout color, texture, or both.
First thing to add is a pair of black tights with some texture. The texture gives depth and creates more of a “look.” We snap a picture of this girl at the Chicago Art Institute Alumni Reception. We felt the textured tights finished her look perfectly.
Next, try to find a pair that is neutral with a pattern. I personally have a pair of nude fishnets to spice up a neutral palette. This woman matched cream textured tights with gray studded shoes. It changed what could have been a plain-jane work outfit to something with style.

Black Tights with Color
Then when you are ready, go bold with color. At first you might want to back off from this, but be brave. The bright fuchsia floral print up the side of these black tights set off an all-black outfit with pizzazz. And when you see someone with a fun color on, don’t you just think they are probably a fun person?
These are the starting points for my tight collection this year. Where are you headed? Are you going with the red tartan Falke tights? Maybe the two-tone Donna Karan ones (front red, back black)? Or for holiday parties are you going with the jewel-encrusted ones the Fashion Examiner wrote about? Whatever you choose, have a little fun with them. After all, what’s the point of accessories (and fashion) if you aren’t having fun?
